Taking care of your oral health should be a top priority. Not only will it preserve the functionality and appearance of your teeth, but it can also have a wider impact on your overall health and wellbeing. Oral health problems have been linked to a range of diseases and conditions, including: heart disease, stroke, diabetes, dementia and more.

Brushing and flossing are only a small aspect of maintaining a great oral healthcare routine. Regular visits to your dentist are equally as important. Not only can your dentist perform a number of thorough procedures that preserve your oral health, but your dentist is also able to detect any potential problems early. This early detection allows for treatment in the primary stages, which is usually significantly less invasive, less complicated, and less costly than waiting until the problem progresses.

Teeth Cleanings at Kent Burnett, DDS

Unfortunately, no matter how well you brush and floss your teeth at home, you will not be able to match a professional dental cleaning.

Routine cleanings are usually performed by your dental hygienist. Your hygienist will explain what work is being done during the treatment. Depending on your gum health, you might be prescribed a different kind of dental cleaning.

The health of your gums can be measured by something known as a “pocket reading”. This is where the depth of the tiny pockets between your teeth and gums are measured. If you have shallow pockets, then a regular clean should be sufficient to maintain your oral health.

If you have deep periodontal pockets, your gums are probably also bleeding and may have even started the irreversible process of receding. This stage of gum disease requires a deep clean, known as scaling and rooting.

Treating Gum Disease with Scaling and Root Planing

Before having your teeth scaled and planed, you will be given an anesthetic, so you cannot feel any discomfort. The scaling and rooting process involves a detailed scaling of the root surface, in order to decrease inflammation of the gum tissue and clear away any plaque.

The process is carried out in quadrants: the upper right, upper left, lower right, and lower left. You may need a scaling and rooting treatment in one or all of these quadrants. Depending on the extent of gum disease, you may also need to attend multiple scaling and rooting appointments to return your mouth to full health.

Dental Hygiene Cleaning For Braces

Dr. Burnett is also pleased to be able to offer a complete cleaning service for children with orthodontic treatments. Braces are notoriously difficult to clean effectively. Regular professional cleans by your oral care provider are essential to preserve the long-term strength and health of your child’s teeth. Dr. Burnett and his team have the skills and experience necessary to deeply clean around the dental prosthesis, without harming delicate wires and brackets.
